Cricket»ICC Teams» South Africa
Cricket spread its roots in South Africa from the time Great Britain began to seize control from the Dutch in the late 1700s. The first recognized cricket match in the history of South Africa was played on 5 January 1808. South Africa becomes the third Test nation following the England and Australia in 1889. The first-class cricket starts in the country also in 1889. Political situation kept South Africa out of the ICC Cricket World Cup until 1992. Champions Trophy in 1998 was major triumph of Proteas. This team constantly remains on upper chart of ICC rankings, but could not deliver in the mega events. Super Sport Series is the first-class domestic competition of the country. Graeme Pollock is all-time great player of South Africa. In the test history only Don Bradman has averaged more than Pollock. Though possessed world-class team World Cup remains far- away from Proteas.
